Well, I played the new DOD: S, and it pissed the hell out of me. Mainly because I could see what a good game it could make! So I have taken it upon myself to write you all a proposal of the kind of game I think could be made on the Source engine.

Firstly, the countries (and armies) involved:
Germany:
Wehrmacht
Waffen-SS
Fallschirmjaeger
Japan:
Imperial Army
UK
Royal Army
USA
US Army
US Marine Corps
USSR
Red Army
Red Army Guards Corps
On some maps, Italian weapons would be available to the Waffen-SS (the so-called SS Italiene Division that saw service in Italy in 1944-45). Also on some (i.e., early-war or Africa) maps, the Brits could also use French weapons. Only two countries would be allowed on any map, but multiple armies might possibly be incorporated on any one map.

Pretty well perfect IMO.
What would differentiate the Wehrmacht and the SS?
Weapons, my friend. See the REALLY big post?
Skins would be different too.

oh, and one last thing for weapons:
Japanese assault can use the Type 89 Knee Mortar instead of the pole mine (more range, but the need to stop and "deploy" the weapon)
Offline
edited the weapons list to add a couple of light mortars to assault class, and flame-throwers (I think HL2 could have a REALLY cool effect for this one). Also removed the MKb42(H) from the FJ Gunner - this weapon would be cool, but it never saw service in WWII

Now, for maps... these are only suggestions, of course. Feel free to post your own
Guadalcanal (US Army/USMC vs. IJA)
D-Day (US Army or Brits vs. Wehr/SS/FJ)
The Eagle's Nest (US Army vs. SS)
Battleship Bismarck (c'mon, it'd be cool!) (Brits vs. Wehr/FJ)
Berlin '45 (Wehr/SS/FJ vs. Red Army/Guards)
Stalingrad (Wehr vs. Red Army)
all the maps from the original DoD v1.1... suitably updated, of course

Afrika Korps would be a skin of Wehrmacht, yes

the other thing I'd like to see is a sort of "map pack" series.
something like this:
BF 1942 Map Pack (maps from BF42 converted to Source)
CC1/2/3 Map Pack (all our favourite maps from the CC series converted to Source)
perhaps some "movie-theme map packs" like an Enemy at the Gates map pack, a Saving Private Ryan map pack, or a Band of Brothers map pack

now I have a conundrum to put to you: would we rather use the Soviet Guards Corps or Stalin's elite NKVD divisions as the second Soviet group? The Guards are a little less politically charged, but the NKVD were more akin to the SS, and thus more likely to possess the "elite" equipment like semi-auto rifles and select-fire weapons.

It so must be the NVKD people, because they had bowties, and yah...

Bowties?
Not sure where you're getting your information on the NKVD.

edited the list to include a limited number of weapons (including the K 43 rifle and the MP 40) that were sometimes used with a silencer. The trade-off should be self-evident: silencers eliminate muzzle-flash and decrease noise, but also decrease hitting power. In some weapons (i.e. Sten) firing extended automatic bursts with a silencer would incur an overheating problem like the MG 42. Also re-added the MKb42, as I discovered that it did indeed see limited service with the Germans in 42-43, and re-named the G 43 as the K 43 - a minor, almost esoteric concern, but seeing as the vast majority of German "43" semi-automatic rifles were produced under the K 43 designation, there you go - and added the semi-automatic G 41 as an SS Gunner's option.
